Introduction

Indian coal at the pithead is the cheapest coal in the world. With a low sulphur content, Indian coal is eco-friendly. CIL’s business plan therefore aims primarily to translate these strong economic fundamentals of coal into prosperity for the country and the company.

With eight wholly owned subsidiary companies, operating in as many states, CIL’s activities comprehensively cover A to Z in coal extraction, identification of coal reserves, detailed exploration followed by projectisation, design and implementation of projects and optimizing operations in 465 existing underground and open cast mines, 17 beneficiation plants and one coal carbonization plant are some in CIL’s range of activities.

Central Mine Planning & design Institute (CMPDI) is the consultancy wing  of CIL, registered and established as a subsidiary company ,having more than three decades of experience & expertise in mineral exploration  & Resource Evaluation ,Mine Planning  & Design, Infrastructure Engineering, Environment, Mineral beneficiation ,Management Services, Laboratory Services , ICT in Mining ,Specialized services and research and Development . CMPDI  offers consultancy to the outside clients also  apart from  undertaking in-house consultancy.

CMPDI has multidisciplinary technical professionals who have innovation &  initiative to deliver fast & effective solutions in planning implementations & management of projects .It is equipped with modern Laboratory facilities  for undertaking of various analytical works to  supplement its services.

CMPDI is recognized as "preferred " Consultant by Indian and overseas clients including Government and Private Sector, United  Nations Agencies and International Financial Institutes. CMPDI is registered with  World Bank, Asian Development Bank And African Development Bank And United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

CMPDI has prepared over 900 mining project reports with individual project capacity up to 35.0 Mtpa Opencast Mine. It has also experience in Mechanised  Underground Mining  Technology for exploitation of Coal Seams spanning from 1 metre to 2 metres thickness at different gradients from flat to 75 degrees, with soft to extremely  hard coal under varying roof strata conditions.  CIL welcomes private participation in coal beneficiation. Participation of International coal mining companies in development of underground coal mines with modern technology is also receiving CIL’s consideration.

The Government of India, the sole owner of CIL, has sanctioned a major policy support package which, besides restructuring Government ‘s holding in the company, has progressively free coal prices from administrative control. Coal mining is also being opened up to private investment. The implication of the policy support and sector reforms in terms of CIL’s ability to attract resources globally is far-reaching. CIL confidently looks forward to its emergence as one of the largest tax/dividend paying corporate in India by the turn of the century.
